In this book, Tivadar Soros (father of philanthropist George Soros, and cofounder of an influential Esperanto literature magazine) tells the story of escaping from Russia after WWI. He also wrote the book /Maskerado ĉirkaŭ la morto/, in which he tells the subsequent story of escaping from Nazi-controlled Hungary during WWII! This book first appeared as a series in Literatura Mondo (the magazine that Soros cofounded) and then was published as a book in 1924. In 1999, it was republished, with an intro by Humphrey Tonkin (who translated and researched Maskerado). This is a small book -- so it was a quick read. I found it interesting, but hard to follow. My guess is that I don't know enough about the history of that time and place. There's a map, showing the route he took. And it was an event-filled journey, so it wasn't a boring read -- just a little confusing.
